After having the stomach flu for three days and not getting many chances to get outside, I realize in this moment how special nature is. Sitting outside and just taking a second to listen to the birds, rain drops, and of course my dog chewing on a stick, was the therapy I needed. Having to tune out the busy road hundreds of feet away is always a challenge. People may think it’s bad to sit in the rain right after fighting off a cold, but it’s exactly what my body needed and craved. The value of nature is what we seem to be lacking as a society. Why is there value for cutting down a tree? That tree that is being cut down is holding carbon that we can’t afford to be released into the environment. That tree is a home to hundreds of organisms from microscopic organisms to large mammals. That tree could have living longer then the person cutting it down. The leaves that tree provides for the soil is a natural fertilizer. The roots provides soil fertility and a stable carbon storage. What gives us the right to determine the price for a dead tree to be more then a living tree? In the natural world, we are the outcasts, yet we think we are superior. How can we find a way for society to value a living tree more than a dead tree? In order to save planet ocean, we need to stop being the outcasts and start believing in the benefits of LIVING trees.
